User an External Battery as Your Laptop Power Supply
By Robakerost
Really Get Mobile
Don't be the one walking around the local coffee shop looking under tables for an outlet. Get a reliable laptop power supply with an external laptop battery.
Have you ever been in your local coffee shop looking around under all
the tables and chairs for a free outlet for your laptop? It's a real
pain isn't it! It's such a drag not to mention you look funny walking
around looking under all the tables. I still haven't figure out why
more coffee shops and cafe's that advertise "free wi-fi" don't have
more outlets! So what do you do if you're laptop battery lasts the
average 90 minutes that most do? Maybe you forgot your laptop power
supply at work and could really use a long-lasting battery right now.
Especially if you have more than a few hours worth of work. (although
I'd say if you have more than a few hours worth of serious work, you
may want to pick some place other than a coffee shop) At least if I'm
being honest with myself, I'm going to a coffee shop to work but also
to socialize and feel I'm part of something... like it's my "third
place." But that is a different topic, back to extending the work time
of your laptop.
So, with the average laptop batter lasting 90
minutes, 1.5 hours, what do you do if you're going to be working for a
longer period of time. Or, what about this scenario, you've had your
laptop with you during an afternoon meeting (running on battery power),
then stop by the coffee shop to finish up a few things and realize you
only have 20 minutes worth of battery time left. Or worse yet, you
leave your laptop power supply at work or home! I've done this many
times running out of the house late for work or getting home, what a
drag!
Well, don't just think that you have to make due with the
things you already have, i.e. internal laptop battery and manufacturers
power supply. You do have other choices, ones that will not only make
your laptop last longer on remote power, but give you the ability to
power other mobile devices as well. Enter the External Laptop Battery
Supply. The external laptop battery can be used as a universal laptop
power supply providing power to many different laptop models as well
as other mobile devices.
Battery technology has come a long way. Just look at what they're doing
with the Lithium batteries in cars and cell phones! Now you have an
alternative power source for your laptop that can last up to 10 hours!
Now with that said, some of these external laptop batteries can be
heavy (1 to 3 lbs) but some of the more expensive ones can be pretty
light. Obviously you're not going to get over 10 hours of battery life
without some trade off. The price for these batteries is anywhere from
$100 to over $500 dollars. Someone should be able to find a suitable
replacement for their internal battery power around any budget.
External laptop batteries will work for most major brands like Sony,
Acer, IBM, Gageway, Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Plus many come with dozens of
adapter tips which enables you to plug-in many other mobile devices
like portable DVD players and mp3 players or PDA's.
So if you really want to be mobile with your laptop, look into one of
these external laptop batteries. You'll get longer work time for those
days you spend more time talking at the coffee shop then working! Plus
you won't have to look like a dork walking around searching for an
outlet!

Interesting, I had no idea these even existed. Great idea for someone on the go a lot.
Thanks for the comments!
I find them very expensive. I'd rather buy a laptop designed for autonomy, like one of those little netbooks. Not to mention that carrying this around ads extra weight to my already loaded bag
I have never heard of this, but fortuneatly with a mini notebook and 5 hours of battery life mostly I'm fine.
I agree with the netbook option. I use one of those on vacations; to upload photos, check email, etc.
This is definitely a good investment...my laptop is old and hardly lasts an hour anymore if its not plugged into the wall!

Very cool idea, and yes, it is annoying looking for a power outlet. Thanks for the info.
